One thing I most look forward to when traveling locally and abroad is to sit down and enjoy a delicious meal. Trying out the local cuisine helps you have a greater appreciation for that region, and it enhances your overall travel experience. Well one of the most awesome things about living in the good ole US of A, is that it is a huge melting pot. Although traveling is not happening any time soon, this should not put a damper on our taste buds. Luckily, we have the option of trying international cuisine without traveling around the world.
Last weekend I had a taste for something different and decided to get some Kabobs. I tried out a local restaurant and I was not feeling it. I went back to the drawing board and did another quick search online. I came across the Kabob Room in Stafford, VA. They serve traditional Pakistani delicacy. The menu offered great choices from Boneless Chicken Kabob, Grilled Fish (Tilapia), and Lamb Chops. My wife and I have never had Pakistani food before, but we decided to give it a shot. She ordered the Grilled Fish and I ordered the Boneless Chicken Kabob and Chicken wrap. Each order comes with Naan bread and your choice of sides, chickpeas, or spinach. My wife and I like to order a lot because we want to try out several dishes to give an honest review. The staff at Kabob Room were pleasant and friendly. The overall appearance of the restaurant was clean. The menu was easy to read and understand and provided an accurate description of the food we ordered.
Once we returned home with our order we were impressed with the overall appearance of the dishes. Let me just say that the food was amazing! The chicken was very flavorful with just the right amount of spice to it. The chicken breast was very juicy and tender and went perfectly on a bed of rice. I am not sure what seasoning they used, but I wish I could have some for personal use. The chicken wrap was great also. The wrap was packed full of chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, and sauce. I took one bite and could tell this was different than other wraps I have had from other nationalities. All meals are not created equally, and I think it starts with the seasoning and sauce. My wife enjoyed the grilled fish as well. It was seasoned to perfection, cooked well and flavorful. The salad dressing was a blend of herbs and oil with a touch of spice. The spinach was cooked well and had a nice creamy texture. Our food paired nicely with the fresh Naan bread as well.
I hope hearing about this experience has encouraged you to get out and support some of the local restaurants. If you are not able to get out or do not have access to international cuisine, travel the world right in your kitchen and create a dish from a different region. A few years ago, my wife and I started to have a cultural night for our date nights. We would put a lot of effort into researching different authentic recipes from a certain country and attempt to recreate the dish. Please understand we quickly realized this was going to be a task to find certain seasonings to make the dish taste like the authentic version. As we try different food from different countries, we will start incorporating the dishes into our date night repertoire. Pakistani cuisine is now high on the cultural night list.
